Metastatic Breast Cancer

The Challenge

Unlike patients diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, patients with metastatic breast cancer (mBC) often lack awareness and receive less care and support than they need from the breast cancer advocacy community. Our client, a large global pharmaceutical company, sought to evolve the public’s awareness of breast cancer to include mBC and ensure provisions of required education, care, and support for women with this disease, while also empowering patient organizations to inform policies that improve time to diagnosis and access to treatments.

Our Solution

Latin America (10 countries):

  • Defined the patient journey for a person with mBC.

  • Developed a multi-year education, advocacy, and policy program for patients and the public across the region.

  • Partnered with > 25 patient organizations to execute the strategy.

  • Co-created and distributed educational materials with patient leaders and prominent oncologists for patients and families, which remain relevant and sought after even today.

  • Led and facilitated annual patient summits.

  • Shared cancer policy updates with patient and advocacy leaders.

  • Facilitated communications and media trainings.

  • Guided strategic programming for annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October) awareness campaigns.

  • Created and shared a poster detailing this 7-Year mBC Advocacy Program at the 2021 ABC Global Alliance Congress.

Asia (4 countries):

  • Systematically sourced reliable statistics on mBC for each country through thorough and extensive database research.

  • Conducted competitive intelligence analysis to understand industry activities in mBC and remaining gaps.

  • Proposed initiatives for improving access to treatment and utilizing appropriate e-funding mechanisms within each country.

DKI DIFFERENCE

Over the past seven years, DKI Health has led a program involving over 25+ patient advocacy organizations across 12 Latin American countries to educate patients and families, provide support materials, reduce stigma, and influence cancer policies. These collective efforts have resulted in new cancer policies in Brazil, mandating diagnosis and treatment within 30 days of a doctor's suspicion, and ongoing discussions in other countries, including Chile and Colombia. Our work was also showcased in a poster presentation at the Advanced Breast Cancer Six International Consensus Conference.
